My Thoughts: While I wasn't blown away by the first book in the Dire Earth Cycle, it was entertaining enough that I wanted to continue, to see what would happen next.

While Russell was bad enough, the author has to throw in the horrible Gabriel to add to the problems facing our heroes. I would think things were bad enough as they were, but apparently not for Mr. Hough... So, again, we're looking at some pretty high-octane freneticness, with lots of 'slodies and big booms. Still, I liked this book better than the first. I think it's because I liked Grillo as a villain more than I did Russell.

Russell is a horrible person, just terrible. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about him. Grillo, at least, wants to make the world a better place. Sure, he wants to make the world a theocratic fascism, but he has the best interests of most people at heart. That said, he's a cruel and ruthless bastard, and he's exactly the kind of villain I like. Russell wonders at one point why Grillo's men are so much more committed and controlled, and quite simply it's because he uses respect rather than intimidation to gain his way. It's a fascinating character study, really.

This one ended on a heck of a cliffhanger, so now I'm biting my fingers hoping to be approved for the last so I can finish the series. We'll see. If you liked the first one, hopefully you'll like this one, too. If you didn't like the first one that much, you still might like this one. I definitely liked this one much better than the first. This book is available in August, and I've provided links above (where formatting allowed) to preorder the book if you'd like.
