Women who rocked: Betty Blowtorch

Betty Blowtorch was a hard-rock band formed in 1998. They had an awesome sound, strongly reminiscent of Joan Jett, especially in her Blackhearts' years. Sadly, they only put out one studio album, Are you Man Enough, before the tragic death of their lead singer in a car crash in 2001. Another album, including rarities and live songs, was released later as Last Call. A movie was made about the band, Betty Blowtorch and her Amazing Adventures. More info here.

Women rockers are few and far between. I've found a few really good ones lately, including In This Moment and Otep, but Betty Blowtorch is one I particularly like, because Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is a classic favorite of mine.

How about you, my readers? Any great women rockers to recommend? Leave your comments!

  1. I am old, I loved Joan Jett and I adored Pat Benitar.. But Heart, I adored Heart. I was able to see them over and over and over being a Seattle girl.

In 1998 I was (AM)a huge Sarah Mclachlan Fan and now listen also to Nelly McKay so since neither of them are ROCK, well.... ya, old

    1. Sweetie, IIRC we're about the same age... :-) Pat Benitar is awesome; I was going to mention her, but didn't really have much to say. I completely forgot about Heart - yeah, awesome stuff!! Sarah Mclachlan is good, but I haven't heard of Nelly McKay; will have to find some and listen, see if I like it. I don't know if you saw my posting a couple weeks back about Styx (which I linked to that sentence)? Anyway, you'd have a better sense of my age from reading that then from reading this one...

  2. I don't remember this band. How can that be? I know Joan Jett, but this band escapes my memory. Dang. Those were my rocking years too! LOL!

    1. Ah, sorry, I should probably have mentioned... Betty Blowtorch formed in 1998, released their only studio album in 2001, and then the lead singer was killed later that year in New Orleans. So, they are what I call a "New Millenium" band, but they have tradition hard rockin' sounds like Joan Jett, and one of their songs is all about hair bands.

    2. Thanks! And wow. Sounds like a short lived band time. Sorry to hear about the lead singer. Dang. Rough break.

    3. There are several links among the text you can click on to find out more about them. You could also find information about them under "Butt Trumpet." I'm a bit confused, as I thought Butt Trumpet had been the lead singer's former band, but I saw somewhere that was actually the official name of the band and Betty Blowtorch was a solo name. I have no idea... Heh.
