@MajraBook @LadyReaderStuff #Giveaway Book Blast MAJRA by J. Simon (GC)

“In distant Sa'bahr, divinely inspired lunatics spend their lives inscribing every story ever told upon the backs of giant tortoises. The tortoises spend their lives weeping, for they cannot read the wondrous tales written upon their own backs...”

Aris has managed to live a quiet life, even in a stark desert land of glorious tales and beautiful lies, crazed artists and mad hermits. So what if he has a knack for tales? A mere messenger can't change the world. Mighty great works he'll leave to mighty great men.

Now the soldiers of Majra have come to pacify his “savage” people.
Few dare stand against them. Certainly Aris never meant to. Taking work with the invaders was a way to help his family, not gain insights into the alien ways of their singular truth.
Beset by beguiling widows and vengeful plutocrats, firebrand Sheyks and sword-tongued maidens, the choices Aris faces could save his land—or break it.

J Simon is a small blue bird who has been published in magazines and anthologies ranging from Baen's Universe to Writers of the Future.

This surely indicates a lapse by the Guardians of Taste, and inquiries are being made.
There is also a very small chance that nuclear test fallout has transformed J Simon into a gigantic nuclear starfish poised to attack Tokyo, but these reports have yet to be confirmed.

@TeamFallen & @wjk8099 #Spotlight & #Sneak_Peek "Warrior Beautiful by Wendy Knight

Today I'm featuring Warrior Beautiful, including a book spotlight, a sneak peek, and a giveaway, so be sure to check it all out!

Warrior Beautiful (Riders of Paradesos, #1)
Author: Wendy Knight
Check out on Goodreads!
Purchase on Amazon and Barnes and Noble!

Synopsis: Working with the ex you secretly love to save the souls of the innocent is almost as bad as working with a mighty battle unicorn who would be thrilled to watch you plummet to your death.

Scout is used to pain. Her body has been broken, her heart has been broken, and the only thing keeping her together is her relationship with her younger sister. Lil Bit be-lieves in unicorns and terrifying monsters she calls soul stealers. But unicorns and monsters aren’t real…are they?

When Lil Bit falls prey to the mysterious disease sweeping the country, Scout has two options – believe the doctors who say it’s a pandemic or believe Lil Bit, who says it’s the soul stealers. She chooses her sister and goes looking for the unicorns who are supposed to save them. What she finds aren’t the cute pastel mythical creatures she expects. Battle unicorns are big and tough and full of attitude. Who knew?

Unicorns are real and so are the monsters. Soul stealers are reaping the souls of the innocent, and the unicorns are fighting to stop them. But to save the world, they need the help of humans – the enemy they’re dying to protect. And first to sign up for the fight is the ex-boyfriend Scout’s heart won’t stop loving, no matter how determined she is to hate him.

About the Author

Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her
rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.

You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heel for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.

SNEAK PEEK

“Do I have to avoid your rear feet like I do normal horses?
Will you randomly get the urge to kick me?” Scout glanced down
at Ashra’s giant hooves. They were sharp, unlike regular horse feet.
Made to do damage. She remembered watching Torz attack with
his hooves the… day? before. Definitely made for doing damage.
“If I want to kick you, it doesn’t matter where you stand,” Ashra
said. She unfurled her wing from her side and knocked Scout away
from her.
Scout heard Ashra’s snicker in her head, and if horses could
grin, Ashra was definitely doing it. “Watch it, you overgrown
bird.” Scout eyed her, thinking about shoving her back, but Ashra
was huge. It would be like trying to shove a barn over.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.” Ashra whinnied, an actual horsy
sound, throwing her head around and stomping one hoof. Scout
was so shocked to hear such an animal-like sound coming from a
legendary unicorn that she tripped over her own feet and landed in

the dirt.

#Review: @MaraValderran "Heirs of War"

Heirs of War review
Author: Mara Valderran
4 out of 5 stars

Book Info: Genre: Urban/Epic Fantasy
Reading Level: Upper Young Adult/New Adult
Recommended for: Fans of fantasy
Book Available: October 13, 2013
Trigger Warnings: child abuse, murder, torture

My Thoughts: I think my favorite thing about this book is the way Celtic mythology is woven into it. It's not overt, but subtle things, and also the naming conventions. Which means pronunciation will drive you crazy, since Gaelic is the closest thing to Celtic and the way things are spelled vs. how they are pronounced is nowhere near the same.

There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and so the book goes back and forth between the point of view of the five girls: Zelene, Ariana, Isauria, Rhaya, and Terrena. It goes by chapter, though, so there is no head-hopping. I had an ARC and have heard that there have been some changes made for the final copy, but the essential storyline remains the same.

The abuse that Zelene and Sheridan both experience is heartbreaking. It's unfortunately also all-too-common, especially in the foster-care system like Zelene experienced. I suspect we're in for a big reveal about Sheridan at some point in one of the next books.

This is the first book in a proposed series. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I'm hoping that the author will hurry up and right the next book so I can learn what happens next. The book is a real page-turner and I found myself completely engrossed in the story. If you like fantasy, and have been looking for something that sort of mixes urban fantasy with epic fantasy with tough heroines, than definitely check this story out. It's really enjoyable.

Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Zelene doesn't believe in magic or prophecies. When she's told she is part of the prophecy foretelling five powerful girls bringing peace to the war-torn worlds, she scoffs. The idea of other dimensions layered on top of the world she lives in is almost as ludicrous as the idea that she might be able to save them. After she is attacked by magic-wielding assassins, she finds she can't argue with reality.

As their enemies strike, the girls are taken back to their world and discover the ties binding them together. Rhaya has always had an uncanny knack for reading people, but can’t seem to unravel the mystery tying her to Isauria, the new friend she bonded with instantly. For years, Isauria has been dreaming of Terrena, a girl living her life on the run in a magical world ripped apart by the tragedies of war, completely unaware that she is psychically linked to the world she was born in.

Zelene views them all with a distrustful eye, familial bonds or no, and can think of a place or two she’d like to shove the crown she supposedly inherited. When she learns that her long-lost twin Ariana has been captured by the rebels, Zelene’s attitude changes. She doesn’t know how she is supposed to go against an army of magic-wielding rebels when her own ability to manipulate the elements is still locked within her. But can she trust the elders to rescue Ariana when it seems their medieval politics are what brought about the war in the first place? With all that is at stake, the answer becomes clear to Zelene.

Screw the worlds. She’s getting her sister back.

@MaraValderran #Book #CoverReveal "Heirs of War" by Mara Valderran

Isn't that a great cover! However, this is more than a cover reveal. I'm going to give you some information about the book, tell you about a great giveaway by this author, tell you a bit about the author and even provide you some links, isn't it exciting?  So, off we go.

First of all, be sure to add this book to your shelves over at Goodreads (if you're still brave enough to be there).  Don't be worried if the cover over there looks a bit different; at the time I'm setting this up there is a "keeper" cover up there to help preserve the mystery until this reveal.  You can also stalk the author on Facebook, Twitter, and her blog by clicking on these links.

Oh, wait, did I mention a giveaway?
Right. You can sign up to win a paperback or e-book copy of the book, a poster, a $25 Amazon gift card, or a character named after you in book two! So, just slick anywhere in the sentence outlining the prizes and you'll be taken to the post you need.

So, I don't know about you, but looking at that cover makes me very curious as to what this book is all about, doesn't it you?  Are they sisters?  What is the deal with their fire and ice?  So, let me just help with that curiosity by providing the blurb for you here.  First of all, let me tell you it is a New Adult fantasy, and one that looks pretty interesting to me.

Heirs of War blurb:

That sounds pretty cool, amirite? Let me tell you all right here, I am reading this book, second week of October, so be sure to watch for my review.

Now, then, but who is Mara Valderran?  Fair question.  Let me tell you a bit about her, okay?

About the Author:

Mara Valderran has been coming up with stories pretty almost since she could talk, often commandeering her brother's G.I. Joes to play out her fictional tales alongside her Barbies. Once she hit adolescence and realized playing with dolls wasn't cool anymore, she started putting her ideas to paper. And she hasn’t stopped since.

Mara is more than just a madwoman with a writing box. She lives in the south with her husband and demanding cat. She hopes to one day meet Daniel Jackson from SG1, or at least the actor who played him. When she’s not writing, you can find her reading, playing video games, or spending time at her favorite local coffee shop.

So, I put all the stalking links above for you. But just because I want you to be sure to go stalk this great new author, I'll put them all down here, too.

@ElizaTilton and @Curiosity Quills #GuestPost #Books Featuring "Broken Forest" by Eliza Tilton

Hopeless he'll never be more than the boy who didn't save his brother, 17-year-old Avikar accepts his life as the family stable boy, trying to forget the past. But when his sister, Jeslyn, is kidnapped, the thought of losing another sibling catapults him on a desperate quest. With his best friend by his side, and using the tracking skills he learned from his father, he discovers Jeslyn has been taken, kidnapped by one Lucino, the young lord of Daath, a mystical place thought only to exist in fables.

And Lucino has plans for Jeslyn.

His shape-shifting brethren feed off the auras of humans, and Jeslyn's golden hue is exactly what Lucino needs to increase his power. The longer it takes Avikar to reach her, the more entranced she becomes with Lucino's world, and     the harder it will be for Avikar to set her free.

He failed his family once. He won't fail again.

Broken Forest is told from three alternating perspectives: the hero, the kidnapped girl and the enchanting lord who may or may not be human. Writing in the three different POV’s allowed me to delve into each character. Most high fantasy tends to be written in 3rd person, but I love the closeness of first. Through each character’s chapters you get a different view on what their feeling and why they’re doing what they’re doing. Most readers don’t get to see the villain’s side, well, in Broken Forest you do.

This fantasy is a blend of adventure and romance. A fast paced read with tons of action that will keep you flipping to the next page.

Eliza Tilton is the author of the YA Fantasy, Broken Forest, published by Curiosity Quills Press. You can find her blogging about video games and writing on her blog and doing bi-weekly posts on author media over at YAStands.

She graduated from Dowling College with a BS in Visual Communications. When she’s not arguing with excel at her day job, or playing Dragon Age 2, again, she’s writing. Her stories hold a bit of the fantastical and there’s always a romance. She resides on Long Island with her husband, two kids and one very snuggly pit bull.

Book Review: "The Death of Magic": Saga of the New Gods, book 2 by Daniel Black

The Death of Magic by Daniel Black

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book Info: Genre: Fantasy
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: Those who enjoyed the first book, can handle the trigger warnings
Animal Abuse: a cat is lost when his family moves away; he is captured by a budding young sociopath who tortures him. Explicit.
Trigger Warnings: rape, sexual slavery, sexual assault, slavery, murder, war, fighting, a form of self-rape.

My Thoughts: This book was very, very difficult for me to read. I love cats, so the things that Mr. Mephistopheles went through broke my heart. (spoiler removed). I also had a very difficult time with the horrible things that happen to Lucy with the minotaur, and with anyone captured by Chelsea and turned into a succubus. This is not an easy book to read. That said, I did like the book, quite a lot. It follows on well from the start of the series, and I think this is a series that will appeal to a fairly broad range of people, but especially those who are gamers, be it role-playing games like D&D or video games like World of Warcraft, since the so much of the world is based upon these fantasy worlds. I realize the story will not appeal to everyone, and that there will be people who will be unable or unwilling to read it simply due to the terrible nature of what is happening, but I found it very thought-provoking, and highly realistic. After all, so much of our world is based around violence, and so many of us escape into violent pastimes, that it is hardly surprising that so much of the world would turn into violence and horror under these circumstances.

I commented a few times while editing it, “You're killing me here,” but despite everything. I liked it. It's a strong story, and I see a lot of growth from this author. If this sounds like your sort of story, be sure to check it out. I've provided links below to Smashwords, if you would like a copy, and I'll be holding a giveaway for the first book probably within the week for those who don't yet have it and would like to start at the beginning.

Series Information: Saga of the New Gods is an ongoing series featuring a world where magic is brought back by an accidental wish. The first book was originally released as two, but then rereleased in a single edition.
Book 1: Be Careful what you Wish For: originally read the first part of this book for review, then edited it and the second half. My review is split between the two original editions, here and here.
Book 2: The Death of Magic has just been released.
There is a third book scheduled for this series, plus an addition two trilogies to complete the full set. I will be letting folks know as they are released.

Disclosure: I edited this book. I receive no remuneration based on sales. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis: This novel is the second in the trilogy, Saga of the New Gods. Armageddon has come to the world, and populations reel and despair. Monsters roam the earth, destroying what they will, and all most people can do is hide, and pray that they will be overlooked.

Guest post from Brian D. Anderson, author of The Godling Chronicles

To kick off my reviews of the Godling Chronicles in this blog tour, hosted by JKS Communications and Great Minds Think Aloud Publishing, today I have a guest post by Brian D. Anderson. Watch this blog for the next three days as I bring you the reviews for the first three books of the Godling Chronicles, The Sword of Truth tomorrow, Of Gods and Elves on Saturday and The Shadow of Gods on Sunday (all links are for Smashwords; you can also find the books on Amazon).

Without further ado, here is Brian!

Why Fantasy?

When I tell people that I write fantasy, often their first question is, “why fantasy?” I suppose I could write suspense, mystery, or even contemporary fiction. It isn’t such a stretch for me to imagine myself seeking a story beyond the fantasy genre. But to me, fantasy brings to light the very things that make us who we are.

The ability to contemplate fantasy, is what makes us human. Even as small children, once we’ve learned who mommy is and how to crawl, we are exposed to the fantastical realm of the imagination. Our first stories are of magical creatures, gallant heroes, beautiful maidens, and far away kingdoms. Through fantasy, we learn honor, perseverance, bravery, and love. The noblest aspects of the human character is taught to us through make-believe and flights of fancy.

As adults, we often times forget these beginnings, and choose to leave “childish” things behind. We ground ourselves in stark reality, and set in our mind the bare facts of day to day living. We no longer believe that Snow White was brought back to life by the kiss of true love. We understand that dragons are not real. We fail see the magic that once was as factual as the air we breathe.

With fantasy, we can revisit the part of us that still wants to believe. Sure, I could choose a different genre, but for me, the wonder I find in fantasy fills my heart with delight. And when I am able to share it with others, I feel as if I have made the magic of childhood come back to life. For a few hours, I have rendered the wicked world of adulthood powerless, and allowed someone to forget how cruel life can be.

J. Taylor Publishing Cover Reveal: "Eye of the Soul" by Terri Rochenski

Eye of the Soul

Release Date: October 7, 2013
Target Reader: Adult
Keywords: Fantasy

Back of the Book

 Escape.

That should be Hyla’s first thought as her people are chained and imprisoned for no imaginable reason.

Instead, Hyla finds herself traveling through a land void of Natives, with human soldiers pillaging in desperate pursuit of her, and in search of the mystical Pool of Souls—home to the one man who can save her people.

Or so she believes.

Led by her faith in the deity Fadir, Hyla is met along her journey by Jadon—a human male and fierce King’s warrior, and his childhood best friend Conlin—one of the few Natives aware of his Fadir-given Talents.

Protected by Jadon, guided by Conlin, and with an unfailing belief in the purpose of her pilgrimage, Hyla carries on.

Like her, though, another searches for the Pool, and should he gain access first, everyone she loves, and everything she knows, could be lost.

Forever.

Available! Book 1: Saga of the New Gods "Be Careful what you Wish for" by Daniel Black

Remember my post with the cover reveal for Saga of the New Gods?  If not, that link will take you there.  Anyway, I provided some incorrect information there. The book cover is for Vol 1 of the Saga of the New Gods called Be Careful What you Wish For, but what I did not realize was that Daniel Black had actually combined the original version of this book with the original second book in the series, The Horror of Magic, to create a much longer book! And that book is once again available for download on Smashwords, just follow that link or the one above on the book's name. It's quite a long book--almost 150k words--and only $2.49, which is a great deal!

Also, sometime in the next month or so, I'll hold another giveaway for the updated edition, so watch my blog!
