Author: Wendy Knight
Check out on Goodreads!
Purchase on Amazon and Barnes and Noble!

Synopsis: Working with the ex you secretly love to save the souls of the innocent is almost as bad as working with a mighty battle unicorn who would be thrilled to watch you plummet to your death.

Scout is used to pain. Her body has been broken, her heart has been broken, and the only thing keeping her together is her relationship with her younger sister. Lil Bit be-lieves in unicorns and terrifying monsters she calls soul stealers. But unicorns and monsters aren’t real…are they?

When Lil Bit falls prey to the mysterious disease sweeping the country, Scout has two options – believe the doctors who say it’s a pandemic or believe Lil Bit, who says it’s the soul stealers. She chooses her sister and goes looking for the unicorns who are supposed to save them. What she finds aren’t the cute pastel mythical creatures she expects. Battle unicorns are big and tough and full of attitude. Who knew?

Unicorns are real and so are the monsters. Soul stealers are reaping the souls of the innocent, and the unicorns are fighting to stop them. But to save the world, they need the help of humans – the enemy they’re dying to protect. And first to sign up for the fight is the ex-boyfriend Scout’s heart won’t stop loving, no matter how determined she is to hate him.

About the Author

Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her
rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.

You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heel for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.

SNEAK PEEK

“Do I have to avoid your rear feet like I do normal horses?
Will you randomly get the urge to kick me?” Scout glanced down
at Ashra’s giant hooves. They were sharp, unlike regular horse feet.
Made to do damage. She remembered watching Torz attack with
his hooves the… day? before. Definitely made for doing damage.
“If I want to kick you, it doesn’t matter where you stand,” Ashra
said. She unfurled her wing from her side and knocked Scout away
from her.
Scout heard Ashra’s snicker in her head, and if horses could
grin, Ashra was definitely doing it. “Watch it, you overgrown
bird.” Scout eyed her, thinking about shoving her back, but Ashra
was huge. It would be like trying to shove a barn over.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.” Ashra whinnied, an actual horsy
sound, throwing her head around and stomping one hoof. Scout
was so shocked to hear such an animal-like sound coming from a
legendary unicorn that she tripped over her own feet and landed in

the dirt.

Purchase on Amazon!

Synopsis: Ethan Freeman, ex-Special Forces Ranger, wakes up to discover he is the sole survivor of a fiery commercial airline crash that killed his entire family. His nightmare is only beginning when he becomes the FBI’s prime suspect. Only Ethan knows he’s not a cold-hearted murderer, but he has no idea what happened to him--and why he alone survived.

He finds an unlikely ally in Sam Weaver, the NTSB Chief Investigator. An ex-military pilot, Sam senses Ethan is innocent. She tries to remain dispassionate in her investigation of the crash even as she finds herself attracted to the man who may be America's worst homegrown mass-murderer.

Neither Ethan nor Sam realize that shadowy spiritual forces are at work which will alter their lives forever. A monstrous evil, imprisoned since the time of the Pharaohs, has been released by The Nine, a sinister group of powerful men and women who believe they are the direct descendants of the Anunnaki, ancient Sumerian gods. The demon they have unleashed intends to free The Destroyer from The Abyss, the angelic prison referred to in the Book of Revelation, and unleash a worldwide reign of terror and annihilation.

Facing impossible odds, time is running out for Ethan and all of humanity as he is drawn into an ever-deeper conspiracy--millennia in the making--and learns that he is the key to stopping The Nine. He must overcome his deepest fears and find reserves of strength he never knew he had as he confronts pure evil in order to save himself and an unsuspecting world.

SNEAK PEEK

Less than ten minutes
before we’re all dead,
thought
Ethan Freeman, and there is nothing I can do about it!

The stricken A320
Airbus--originally bound for St. Thomas and now limping back to Charlotte,
North Carolina—shuddered like a bird suffering a mortal wound, then shook
violently.  Shouting and screaming from the rear of the plane drowned out
the prayer of the older couple seated in front of them, “Our Father, Who art in
Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come—”

Lisa, Ethan’s wife,
sobbed beside him.  Across the aisle his eighteen year-old son, Josh,
yelled, “Dad--are we going to crash?”

“No, son,” he lied.
 “We-are-not-going-to-crash.”

Megan, his sixteen
year-old daughter, seated next to her brother, screamed, “The engine is on
FIRE!”

Lisa clung to the seat
arms so hard her fingers turned white and whimpered, “We’re all going to
die--just like Greg,” then moaned, “I don’t want to die—”

Ethan reached for his
wife’s hand as a thunderous explosion shook the plane and slammed him against
the window, knocking breath out of him.  He cried out in agony as the palm
of his right hand was sliced open by a jagged metal clasp sticking up on the
arm rest between him and Lisa.  Blood gushed out of the ugly-looking wound
and splattered the back of the seat in front of him.

The plane banked hard to
the right and the nose suddenly pointed toward the ground, six miles below, as
if the commercial airliner was being plucked from the cloudless, crystal blue
heavens by a giant unseen hand.  Ethan glanced toward the rear of the
aircraft.  A gaping hole replaced the emergency exit.  Loose debris
disappeared violently out of the plane—and there were at least two rows of
seats missing!

Swinging his gaze back
to the First Class Cabin, Ethan noticed that ice crystals now clung to the
windows.  His ears popped as oxygen masks dropped from overhead.
Shivering, he reached for the oxygen mask dangling in front of him like a
puppet on a string and struggled to place it over his mouth and nose.  He
took several deep breaths, ignoring his bleeding hand, then yelled out to his
family, “Put your masks on!”

In the next instant, he
was pressed so hard into his seat it seemed as if he weighed four to five times
his normal weight.  Black spots danced before his eyes and he fought for
breath.

All he could think about
was that he had failed his family—that he had not been able to save them.
He cried out in desperation, “GOD HELP US—”

Moments later, a flash
of blinding white light enveloped him as a blast of fiery heat washed over him.

Then everything went black.

About the Author: Michael J. Webb graduated summa cum laude from the
University of Florida and obtained his J. D. from the same university.
Over the past forty years he has travelled the world in search of adventure.

He is a
history buff, both ancient and modern, and is fascinated by the intersection of
the scientific, supernatural, and Biblical world views, and has studied and
taught from the Bible extensively for more than twenty-five years. He is also
intrigued by recent discoveries in quantum physics that are now providing
extraordinary insights into the reality of the spirit realm, especially as it
relates to the study of Light.  He incorporates all of the above into his
supernatural thrillers.

Michael
and his wife make their home in Charlotte, North Carolina.

@TaraTylerTalks and @Curiosity Quills #Review and #Book Feature "Pop Travel" by Tara Tyler

Pop Travel review (Amazon UK link here, Barnes & Noble link here, Kobo link here)
Author: Tara Tyler
4 out of 5 stars

Book Info: Genre: Science Fiction Mystery
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: Star Trek buffs, people who enjoy sci-fi mystery mash-ups
Trigger Warnings: murder, conspiracy that endangers most people

My Thoughts: I do not think that my Star Trek geekdom is the only reason I see so much similarity between “popping” and “beaming”, although I suppose it is possible. Still, the whole concept is pretty cool, and wouldn't it be nifty to have your own popper and could just pop on over to anywhere immediately? I know I've been hoping for that sort of technology for decades... Well, and unfortunately, the technology is not perfect. At least not when abused! Still... convenient!

This is a enjoyable story, though it took me several days to read it because of my crazy weekend. Cooper is a great character, as are Geri and Hasan. I wish Blake had been fleshed out more; as it is he just comes across as a little crazy and more than a little sociopathic. Still, a fun little story with a great idea behind it, and something I think a lot of people will find to be highly entertaining, and a great way to while away an afternoon or two while reading. This is about the right length for reading on an airplane, or while at the beach. While there are some statements about greed and human failings, this is mostly just entertainment, so don't expect a lot of deep thinking and you'll have a great time with it.

Disclosure: I received an e-book copy of this book from Curiosity Quills in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis: Private Investigator J. L. Cooper always knew pop travel laser teleportation was too good to be true. Finding video of a disintegrating traveler is the stomach-turning proof.

Knowing it would be pointless to upload the video on the nosy, government-monitored Qnet, Cooper digs around, bringing the death of his client and threats to his political little brother, who is in jeopardy of turning to dust anyway for disregarding Cooper’s warnings not to pop. Cooper has to do everything himself.

If he survives his first pop, Cooper won’t let anything distract him from putting an end to Pop Travel's fatal glitch. Not the android security guards, the constant surveillance, or even Southern Comfort in a purple dress, Geri Harper. Nothing Coop can’t handle.

Tara Tyler Biography:
Tara Tyler came out of college as a math teacher to prove learning it is not so bad – anyone can do it! She went on to have a hand in everything from waitressing to rocket engineering.

Living up and down the Eastern US and traveling worldwide has given her many alternate perspectives. Now she resides in Ohio with her three active boys and Coach Husband. Atlanta is the most dear as her parents live there and that’s where she got married. So many stories to tell.

In addition to her novels, she has published short stories and poetry. Her favorite genres to read and write are Science Fiction, Fantasy, Thriller, and Humor, have to have humor! She is also working on a non-fiction book of tips for women who hate housework.

POP TRAVEL is the way to go!
(at your own risk!)

In 2080, technology has gone too far for J. L. Cooper. He is happily hidden in his simple, secluded life as a private detective in a small town, far from any pop travel laser teleportation stations. Until he takes on a client who insists pop travel made his fiancée disappear.

When Cooper investigates, he finds evidence of pop travel’s deadly flaw, sparking a series of murders, attempts on his life, and threats to his brother. He’d like to pass off the evidence but knows he’s being watched and can’t trust anyone. And who would believe him.

The only way he can save his brother is to fool his observers while looking for a way to expose the problem. He decides to go to the source and confront the Creator of pop travel. On his way, Cooper meets Southern siren, Geri Harper (an undercover FBI agent) who tags along despite his protests. When they reach the Creator, he has plans of his own and leads them on a wild detour.

@JKSLitPublicity Presents: Book Feature "Where They Bury You" and Guest Post by Steve W. Kohlhagen

ISBN: 978-0-86534-936-0
Hardcover, $32.95
Paperback, $24.95
eBook, $9.99
344 pages
September 2, 2013
Sunstone Press

In August 1863, during Kit Carson’s roundup of the Navajo, Santa Fe’s Marshal is found dead in an arroyo near what is now the Hubbel Trading Post. The murder, and the roughly million of today’s dollars in cash and belongings in his saddlebags, is historically factual. Carson’s actual explanation is implausible.

Who did kill Carson’s “brave and lamented” Major? The answer is revealed in this tale of a group of con artists operating in 1861-1863 in the New Mexico and Arizona Territories. As a matter of historical fact, millions of today’s dollars were embezzled from the Army, the Church, and the New Mexico Territory during this time. In this fictionalized version, the group includes a Santa Fe poker dealer with a checkered past claiming to fall in love with one of her co-conspirators, and the historically accurate duo of the Marshal of Santa Fe and the aide de camp of the Territories’ Commanding General. It is an epic tale of murder and mystery, of staggering thefts, of love and deceit.

Both a Western and a Civil War novel, this murder mystery occurs in and among Cochise’s Chiricahua Apache Wars, the Navajo depredations and wars, Indian Agent Kit Carson’s return from retirement, and the Civil War. The story follows the con artists, some historical, some fictional, during their poker games, scams, love affairs, and bank robberies, right into that arroyo deep in Navajo country.

ABOUT STEVEN W. KOHLHAGEN

Steve Kohlhagen is a former, now retired, Economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, a retired Wall Street investment banker, and is on several corporate boards, most recently elected to the board of Freddie Mac. While at Berkeley he authored many economics publications, and he and his wife Gale jointly published the murder mystery “Tiger Found” under their pen name Steven Gale in 2008.

Kohlhagen was inspired to write his latest book “Where They Bury You” after reading Hampton Sides’ “Blood and Thunder,” a non-fiction history of Kit Carson and the West. Sides’ reporting of the factual murder of Marshal Joseph Cummings on August 18, 1863 led Kohlhagen to conduct further research on Carson and Cummings, including at the National Archives. He also pulled from his own knowledge of the West, as the writer divides his time between the New Mexico-Colorado border high in the San Juan Mountains and Charleston, South Carolina.
I have a guest post by Mr. Kohlhagen, so let me just put that right here.  He's going to talk to us a bit about how his careers at Wall Street and in academia worked out to put him onto a writing path.  So, here we go!

There is actually a common thread in my careers that most everybody misses.

When I was on Wall Street, people would I ask if I missed teaching and research at Berkeley. And I pointed out that creating and selling complex financial instruments involved a great deal of thoughtful research and successful teaching. Investment banking and derivatives is a constant swirl of researching, learning, and then developing new products. And then the process of training colleagues and then selling to both bosses and customers/clients is nothing more than teaching. And teaching at a very exciting level. None of the Wall Street “students” and clients are there because they are required to be there. All the “students” are interested and engaged. It’s teaching at an exhilarating level.

Then when I announced I was off to write murder mysteries, everybody said, “Huh?” Or words to that effect. “How does that follow writing academic papers and running a trading room floor?” And I responded that I’d always been writing. And that many had always viewed it as fiction. Go back and ask my students and they’ll tell you that my academic papers seemed like fiction to them. And my former Wall Street bosses and clients? What are sales documents but a story that pulls in the audience and convinces them of the reality of the underlying premise.

In short, all are always about communication. Writing academic papers, writing memos to sell a concept or a product, producing sales documents, giving oral or written sales pitches, discovering new theories or new empirical relationships, and then communicating each of these to an audience that needs to be convinced, are all about writing a good story. The major difference is that all of those activities have to create a convincing story in the real world, while writing effective fiction needs to create characters and stories at least as compelling, but that carry the audience into past, present, and future worlds that they care about hopefully, more than they do about memos and sales documents.

How I got into writing murder mysteries specifically, also relates directly to my academic career. About 35 years ago, I told my wife and two mutual friends that I thought mysteries were a “waste of time.” My exact words. The guy, a colleague of mine at Berkeley, amusingly asked me what I did like in fiction. I told him “characterizations.” He smiled and returned with five books. Said, “read these and then see if you change your mind.” I did, and, well, I did. After that I became a voracious reader of Elmore Leonard, Ross Thomas, Robert Parker, et. al. Then decided when I retired from investment banking, I wanted to make the “natural transition”---for me, at least---into writing murder mysteries.

Interesting stuff, eh? I'm also a huge fan of the late Elmore Leonard and like the earlier Robert Parker books; those are good choices for starting on mysteries!  Finally, here's a press release to just tell you a bit more about this book. Enjoy!

FROM WALL STREET TO THE WEST
Financial guru Steven W. Kohlhagen turns to his roots in the American West high desert for his first historical fiction novel ‘Where They Bury You’

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO – Steve Kohlhagen wasn’t convinced after reading Hampton Sides’ nonfiction account, “Blood and Thunder,” that American frontiersman and Indian fighter Kit Carson’s official report of the events in August 1863 was entirely true. And in the 150th anniversary year, Kohlhagen begs the question, “Did the Navajos really shoot Carson’s Marshal?”

His new book “Where They Bury You” puts a different spin on what’s found in the history books. Based on actual facts and a very real murder, this Western murder mystery takes place during the Civil War battles in the New Mexico and Arizona Territories. A former Wall Street investment banker who currently sits on several Board of Directors, most recently joining Freddie Mac’s, Kohlhagen’s retired life in the San Juan Mountains gives him a unique perspective on the region about which he writes.

After researching a group of con artists who did, indeed, embezzle millions of today’s dollars, Kohlhagen sheds fictional light on who committed the actual August 18, 1863 murder of Santa Fe’s Provost Marshal deep in Navajo Territory. The novel vividly depicts battles among Cochise’s Chiricahua Apaches, the Navajo and other Southwestern Indian tribes, Kit Carson, the Union Army, volunteers from the western Territories, and the attacking Confederate Rebels from Texas.

“Steve Kohlhagen knows the West, knows his history, and combines them here into a fast-paced, irresistible story!” raves Bernard Cornwell, award-winning author of over 50 historical fiction novels who USA Today calls “the reigning king of historical fiction.”

“Where They Bury You” is a thrill ride into the old and mysterious ways of the West, to a place and time in history that provides surprises along the way.

In all of the publications in this segment to date, the story of a fully awakened being living in the corporate landscape of leadership has never been explored.

WAKE UP YOUR INNER LEADER WITH ALAN SHELTON’S ‘AWAKENED LEADERSHIP: BEYOND SELF-MASTERY’ Inspiring work by leadership guru wins a 2013 National Indie Excellence Book Award
OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Award-winning storyteller and gifted corporate mentor Alan Shelton spells success with a capital “L.”

Leadership is the heart and soul of Shelton’s groundbreaking literary debut, “Awakened Leadership: Beyond Self-Mastery,” winner of a 2013 National Indie Excellence Book Award and 2012 USA Best Book Award.

Sharing personal stories of guidance and spirituality, Shelton walks with his readers every step of the way toward attaining authentic leadership skills. At the same time, his book challenges readers to think their own thoughts and shape their own attitudes.

“I base my entire coaching process on the fact that the development of maturity within anyone births an expanded ability to lead,” Shelton says. “I care deeply about this leadership approach and have developed programs that blend my storytelling coaching style and executive education background to create a platform for internal and external leadership development.”

“Awakened Leadership” (May 2012, Red Hatchet Press) has earned rave reviews from readers and leadership experts alike for giving readers the courage to put themselves out there and take chances along the way to self-discovery. Shelton’s unwavering passion and vigor is truly inspirational.

“Alan helped me gain understanding about my true nature,” says Jerry Skillet, CEO of 24/7 Digital Inc. “Call it enlightenment, profound insight or self-actualization – it’s a shift that transformed my life.”

Shelton is a corporate leadership coach in Oceanside, Calif., where he lives with his wife Justine. Through years of experience, he possesses a wealth of practical knowledge that translates to the business world and personal growth. Shelton’s clients have included the University of San Diego, VF Corp. and Celgene among others.

###

Biography of Alan Shelton

Alan Shelton is a leader who colors outside the lines, a corporate executive mentor with an entrepreneurial spirit and a gripping speaker who engages his audiences. With a reputation like that, it is no wonder that his book, “Awakened Leadership: Beyond Self-Mastery,” has become so successful.

Shelton graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah after completing missionary work in Peru. By 1977, Shelton had landed his first big gig in the corporate world at PricewaterhouseCoopers, now PwC, where his clients included IBM, Sunkist, Beckman Instruments and Toyota Motor Sales. His journey continued through 1990 when he sold his CPA firm, Shelton, Smith and Townsend, and turned to leadership training. Since then, his client list has grown to include the University of San Diego, Wrangler, VF Corp., The North Face, Celgene and many others.

“Awakened Leadership,” published by Red Hatchet Press in May 2012, has taken the leadership world by storm. The book is the winner of a 2013 National Indie Excellence Book Award as well as a 2012 USA Best Book Award.

Shelton advises and facilitates workshops for international businesses in Oceanside, Calif., where he lives in a refurbished fire station with his loving wife, Justine. He has two children, Kristin and Michael, who earned business degrees from the University of Southern California and the University of Arizona, respectively.

Praise for Alan Shelton’s “Awakened Leadership: Beyond Self-Mastery”

“If, as Alan Shelton, asserts, awakening is akin to enlightenment, then every business person should read this book. ‘Awakened Leadership’ represents a bright new day in an otherwise dark world.” – Marshall Goldsmith, million-selling author of the New York Times bestsellers “MOJO” and “What Got You Here Won't Get You There”

“Don't think for one second that this is just another leadership book. Alan Shelton has broken new ground with ‘Awakened Leadership.’ Alan leads us by his own example – sharing his journey so we can better understand our own, and helping us experience the authentic, love-filled, awakened life we all yearn for.” – Marci Shimoff, New York Times bestselling author of “Happy for No Reason” and “Love for No Reason”

“‘Awakened Leadership’ is unlike any other book you’ve likely read on leadership. Trekking through his own life experiences as both a business leader and spiritual seeker, Alan invites us to explore our own deep restlessness, the beliefs that are driving it, and the transforming power of presence and service to move us through and beyond it.” – Dr. Paula Butterfield, author of “In Our Right Mind: The Transforming Power of Women in Healthcare”

“There’s a new tide rising in the world of leadership. It’s built upon the realization that strategies, techniques and processes that don’t begin at the level of personal awakening serve as little more than band-aids on the corpus of the status quo. ‘Awakened Leadership’ is a rally cry to go deeper and get more personal, then watch the shift that happens on an individual level ripple out to the organization.” – Jonathan Fields, author of “Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt into Fuel for Brilliance”

“[Shelton] writes with a rare combination of lighthearted personal transparency, sharp insight and humor. The skillfully etched stories of his life provide example after example of how, believing in an illusory self-mastery, we all tend to seek fulfillment through ego-driven activities only to be frustrated again and again. For our era of radical, discontinuous change and opportunity, he offers a set of pointers to help disengage the ego mechanism that blocks the experience of awakening.” – Swami Veet Brahm, Osho Viha Information Center

What Readers Are Saying…

On Amazon.com:
“Alan's novel approach to leadership, one that was forged in the fires of business experience and a pursuit for spiritual truth clearly reflects these insights.”

“Alan Shelton's book is a portal to enlightenment for academic and business leaders.”

“It is truly a great book, enjoyable, enlightening, and thought provoking.”

“Besides his thesis being compelling, Alan's life stories are truly riveting, weaving the depth of his experience together with the most profound truths of ancient wisdom, quantum physics and business strategy.”

Transformational leadership books and processes have delivered us to the era of self-mastery. But how do we move from being effective leaders to being awakened leaders? By situating leadership in the nest of the seeker's journey toward truth, you can now stand on the shoulders of the visionaries who have come before, and become conscious of your own position within Source.

Leaving behind charts, maps, and graphs, “Awakened Leadership” is a portal to direct experience via pointers and personal stories that will help you recognize the gift of being who you really are. Then your leadership essence will effortlessly manifest not only in the boardroom, but in all facets of your life.
