Patti Roberts Start Pack giveaway

Hopefully most of you who follow my blog know Patti Roberts; she is an awesome author, and general all-around super person.  She has two series going right now, the Paradox series and the Witchwood Estates serial novels, as well as being involved in the First Five Chapters project and other short story collections.  For those who haven't heard of her, what we're doing today will be an especially great way to start finding your way through her worlds, as we're giving away the first book in each of her series to two people.  Two winners will each receive a copy of Paradox: The Angels are Here and Witchwood Estate: Going Home.  Because it seems there is never enough time for me to do everything, I have only reviewed the first book in the Paradox series; you can read that review here.  Because I have followers all over the place, and because Amazon makes it difficult sometimes to gift books from them to disparate geographic regions (and Patti is in Australia), I'm giving the winner the option of receiving the e-book from Amazon or from Smashwords.  If you're unsure if you can receive a gift from Amazon, it'd probably better to go with Smashwords, as they don't have those sorts of restrictions and problems.

Anyway, below you'll find a Rafflecopter form (and a trailer and a nifty picture!), so just fill it out, watch the trailer, take a look through my links (I've linked Patti's blog here), and next week two lucky folks will be introduced into Patti's worlds.  Good luck!

Book Review: "The Lost": Celestial Blues #2 by Vicki Pettersson

The Lost review
Author: Vicki Pettersson
5 out of 5 stars

Book Info: Genre: Urban Fantasy/Noir
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: fans of urban fantasy, Noir, Rockabilly lifestyle, paranormal romantic suspense
Trigger Warnings: drug use, abuse, and overdose; gangster/mobsters; murder

My Thoughts: I have to say that I think I would probably kill for a car like Kit's. I looked it up and the Duetto is just a gorgeous piece of machinery.

I was really impressed by a bit of detail I noticed in the story, and that is Sergei and Yulyia Kolyadenko. Sergei is described as being from Kiev, and Kolyadenko is a proper Ukranian name. Not every author would take the time to make sure they had the correct regional name!

The drug mentioned in this story, krokodil (street name for desomorphine) is just as nasty as described. If you do a Google image search, you will find image after image of people with the flesh literally rotted off and exposing their bones. It's a truly nasty drug. You would think, “why would someone do that to themselves?” but this drug is the type that is almost instantly addictive. It takes about a half hour to cook it up, and the high lasts only 90 minutes, so once a person has taken that first hit, they're pretty much doomed unless they have the stamina to last through the month it takes to clear out of their system. The fact that people created this thing just blows my mind, and that fact that other people are willing to make their living by basically destroying other people with this sort of drug... it's a terrible thing. I found a very interesting video (and short article), which I've linked here (for sites that allow links and formatting) if you're interested in learning more.

As to the story itself... like the first book, this sort of crossed the urban fantasy/noir/romantic suspense genre lines. However, this book is much more action-based than the first, since most of the characters have already been established in that first book, and the romance aspect is even more subdued, since Grif and Kit are actually together in this book. It's an enjoyable story, and I'm definitely liking the overall story arc of the series, in addition to the specific stories in the books. This is a series I will absolutely be continuing! Recommended!

Series Information: The Lost is the second book in the Celestial Blues series.
Book 1: The Taken, read and reviewed in September, 2012. Review linked here where formatting allowed.

Disclosure: I received an ARC copy of this book from the Amazon Vine program in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis: Griffin Shaw and his wife were both murdered fifty years ago. Now a minor angel, Grif's been granted permission to solve the mystery of his own death... if he helps the Pure angels guide those souls who might otherwise be Lost.

Souls like Jeap Yang, a drug addict in his final moments of life. Grif knows that death is coming, but he cannot intervene. However, Grif's mortal lover, reporter Katherine "Kit" Craig, isn't constrained by angelic protocol. If she can stop a death, she will.

But as Kit is about to find out, there are things more traumatic and evil than murder. A strange new drug is literally eating tweakers' flesh from their bones, and Kit's crusade to get it off the streets is set to propel her and Grif into a battle with a vicious drug cartel. They'll have to scramble to stay alive, stay together, and choose their own fate... before it's chosen for them.

Book review: "Throat of the Night" by Karyn Henley and JKS Communications blog tour

Throat of the Night review
Author: Karyn Henley
5 out of 5 stars

Book Info: Genre: Fantasy/Christian fiction
Reading Level: Young Adult
Recommended for: People seeking family-friendly fantasy, those who enjoy epic fantasy
Trigger Warnings: Murder, violence

My Thoughts: As far as I'm aware, this is the final book; I believe this is a trilogy. And it is a most satisfying ending. This is a very fast-paced book, and we're presented with the answers to a number of questions, and a number of secrets are exposed.

I was really enthralled throughout this whole series, which is what enabled me to read all three books in about a 2 ½ day period. I think a wide range of readers will enjoy this family-friendly epic fantasy, which has great character development, an intricate plot, and an uplifting and joyful overall message. I really do recommend it highly, and hope you'll give this great trilogy a chance.

Disclosure: I received an e-galley of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am part of a blog tour hosted by JKS Communications for this book. A guest post by the author will be posted on Saturday, March 23, 2013. All opinions are my own.

Series Information: Throat of the Night is book 3 in the Angelaeon Circle, published in March, 2013.

Book 2: Eye of the Sword, published in June 2012 (review linked here where formatting allowed)
More information can be found at Karyn Henley's website, linked here where formatting allowed.

Separated, Trevin and Melaia try to keep their faith, hope, and love for each other alive. From the land of Windwing horses to the mountaintop lookouts of Stargazers, from the blight-ridden fields of the Camrithian homeland to the night-dark caverns of the Under-Realm, they face the ultimate test: What are they willing to sacrifice to restore the stairway and save their world? Book Review: "The Taken" by Vicki Pettersson

The Taken review
Author: Vicki Pettersson
5 out of 5 stars

Book Info: Genre: Urban Fantasy Noir/Mystery Thriller Reading Level: Adult

Disclosure: I received a free paperback galley (uncorrected proof) from the Amazon Vine program in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: Griffin Shaw used to be a PI, but that was back when gumshoes hoofed the streets... and he was still alive. Fifty years later, he's an angel, but that doesn't make him a saint. One small mistake has altered fate, and now he's been dumped back onto the mortal mudflat to collect another soul – Katherine "Kit" Craig, a journalist whose latest investigation is about to get her clipped.

Bucking heavenly orders, Grif refuses to let the sable-haired siren come to harm. Besides, protecting her offers a chance to solve the mystery of his own unsolved murder – and dole out some overdue payback for the death of his beloved wife, Evie.

Joining forces, Kit and Grif's search for answers leads beyond the blinding lights of the Strip into the dark heart of an evil conspiracy. But a ruthless killer determined to destroy them isn't Grif's biggest threat. His growing attraction to Kit could cost them both their lives, along with the answer to the haunting question of his long afterlife...

My Thoughts: This is the first book in a new series called Celestial Blues. The second book, The Lost, is scheduled for publication in March, 2013. I will be watching for it. Pettersson has a way with characterization and description that is highly engaging and entertaining, and I greatly enjoyed reading this combination urban fantasy/noir crime thriller.

There was a lot of humor in this, which I always love. There is also plenty of suspense and mystery, and a wonderful romance for those who enjoy that sort of thing – I even enjoyed it, since it wasn’t overwhelming to the plot. There were times I wanted to shake Kit, though; her attitude toward “bad boys” made me shake my head in dismay. They aren’t all like Grif, after all.

I also enjoyed the idea of Vegas and how it has changed; it has made me curious about the old Vegas. The whole rockabilly thing was interesting – I never thought of someone completely living a nostalgic, anachronistic life, like Kit does. It made me wonder if there aren’t people who are so heavily into the Society for Creative Anachronisms that they would live their entire life like that.

At any rate, I can and do highly recommend this book for those who enjoy paranormal fantasies with a romance involved, or those who enjoy urban fantasies. I think this book will please a lot of different people, actually, so definitely do not hesitate to check it out.

Book Review: "Last Condo Board of the Apocalypse" by Nina Post

The Last Condo Board of the Apocalypse review
Author: Nina Post
4 out of 5 stars

Book Info: Genre: Urban Fantasy Reading Level: Adult

Disclosure: I received a free ebook copy of this text from Curiosity Quills (the publisher) in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: When hundreds of fallen angels and dimension-hopping monsters take over a highrise condo building, a down-on-her-luck bounty hunter must team up with an unlikely group of allies to prevent the apocalypse.

Kelly Driscoll tracks down monsters for a living, but the job isn't what it used to be. Vampire hunters are the new big thing, but Kelly doesn't swing that way. When a reclusive client hires her to locate a rival angel, Kelly's search takes her to a downtown highrise that has become home to hundreds of fallen angels and dimension-hopping monsters.

As the fallen angels take over the condo board, argue over who's handling pizza delivery, and begin planning for a little shindig otherwise known as the apocalypse, Kelly must team up with an unlikely group of allies to find her target and keep the fallen angels at bay. In the process, she befriends a reluctant Angel of Destruction, gets tips from a persistent ferret, uncovers the mysteries behind Pothole City's hottest snack food empire, and tries to prevent the end of the world.

My Thoughts: This is Nina Post’s debut novel, which was followed by One Ghost Per Serving, which I just reviewed. (Link to that review by clicking the title.)

Kelly has been barely scraping by ever since that vampire huntress stole all her press (“What kind of a world do we live in...?). Now she’s been asked to find a fugitive in a luxury condo tower with over 500 units in just two days. I have to tell you, this book was very weird – extremely surreal, and full of ridiculousness, just like her other book.
She’s apparently obsessed with titanium sporks, as they have showed up in both books. Also weird names for things – in her 2nd book it is business names, in this book it is Cluck Snacks. Here is a listing of a few of the Cluck Snacks named: Cluck Snack Krispy Baked B’nana Bitz for Dogs and Ferrets (‘Can Be Used As Cereal!’), Cluck Snack Cereal (‘Can Be Used As Cereal!’), Cluck Snack Cake Crisps Cereal, Cluck Snack Top’n (‘Makes Anything Taste like Cluck Snack’), Cluck Snack Sweet n’ Savory Breakfast Syrup, cluck Snack Pizza Flav’r Gum (‘Not for Dogs and Ferrets’), Cluck Snack P’nut Butt’r Chunks (‘For Ferrets, Not Dogs’), Cluck Snack Frozen-Like Dess’rt Bars, Cluck Snack Steamie Pock’tz and Cluck Snack Meal’n a Box Totez (‘Take Your Cluck Snake With You’). There were many more Cluck Snack offerings named throughout the book – that was just a section with a big chunk of them all together.

I really don’t know what to tell you about this book, other than it was surreal, strange, and often silly – the various single-purpose angels were a never-ending source of amusement. I laughed a lot, that’s for sure. But I often had trouble keeping up with what was going on; it was like one of those cartoons with all the flashing lights; hard to track, but amusing. So, if that sounds like your sort of book, be sure to check it out.
